Overview
A family home in Lilydale was extended at the rear to create a combined kitchen and living space with a contemporary aesthetic. The design centres on a large dark-toned kitchen island with a white stone benchtop. A continuous skylight strip runs along the junction where the new roof meets the existing house, drawing natural light deep into the floor plan rather than just the extension itself. Full-width bifold doors open to the garden and outdoor dining area. The floor is polished concrete in light grey, chosen for its thermal mass and low maintenance. A built-in banquette seating area and dining table sit between the kitchen and bifold doors. A dark pendant light hangs over the dining zone.
Completed in 12 weeks. The skylight strip solved the biggest challenge of rear extensions by bringing daylight deep into the existing house. The polished concrete stays cool in summer and retains warmth in winter.
