Overview
A 1970s brick veneer home in Mooroolbark was extended at the rear to create a 38sqm open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. The original house had small, separated rooms with low ceilings and no connection to the backyard. We poured a new slab, installed structural steel to remove the rear load-bearing wall, and built a vaulted ceiling with a large skylight panel that floods the space with daylight. A central kitchen island in deep blue-green with timber waterfall ends provides prep space and seating for four. White perimeter cabinets and a full-height pantry line the rear wall. Wide aluminium bifold doors (4.2m) open the entire rear wall to the garden. The floor is engineered timber in a wide-plank format running continuously through the kitchen and living zone. Three pendant lights hang above the island.
Completed in 14 weeks including permit approval. The home gained 38sqm of connected living space. The skylight eliminated the need for artificial lighting during the day.
